Subic Bay

Scuba Divingdiscover dive

dive subic BayThe tourism office for the area calls Subic Bay the “Pearl of the Orient” and much like a pearl, it value is hidden unless you know where to look. While scuba diving is becoming increasingly popular in the Philippines and more international divers are arriving, the growth of diving in Subic Bay while growing is doing so at a slower rate. As a long time diver at Subic I find this lack of respect as a diving destination a puzzle. The area offers a wide variety of wrecks to dive as well as reefs. Unlike Coron where you ride for hours to get to a wreck site, the majority of Subic sites are within 20 minutes of the dive centers. In addition, unlike most other places in the Philippines, the dive boats used are conventional boats not local banca. Certified divers will find a wide range of dive sites to choose from and some of the best wreck diving in Asia. This is a great place to leard how to dive. If you are not sure if you want to take the full training program, there is a program called "Discover" diving that gives you an introduction.

Ocean adventure

Who said education has to be boring. Add a little education about mammals and conservation to your vacation.

The Ocean Adventure Park is a very good introduction to marine conservation using large marine animals. The leading stars of the shows are the False Killer whales and the dolphins. Performing a number of times a day, they entertain the crowds with feats of acrobats and their swimming ability. The park also has small aquarium that shows some of the marine life in the Philippines and a small WIN (Wildlife in Need) area that cares for injured animals from the surrounding Tours available from Seahorse Tours and Souvenirs.

Subic International Raceway

pit lane subic international  The Subic International Raceway (SIR), a 2.9 kilometer circuit with 12 turns, has been the venue for both local & international races. Located beside the Subic International Airport, it is 15 minutes away from Central Business District of Subic Bay Freeport and was completed in 1994. The new Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway to be completed in a few months has created some changes in the SIR. The new expressway ends at what was the raceway’s parking lot. This has caused the raceway to relocate its parking and has resulted in some change in the course itself. One of the next races is the Philippine National Touring Car Championship Class A & B on August 26,2007and will be held on the newly modified raceway.

Olongapo and Subic Bay Freeport Night life

pier one Subic Bay

There is a wide variety of nightlife available in the Subic Bay area. At the height of the US military presence in Subic, most Filipinos generally looked at Olongapo with disgust. They saw that it was there mostly to cater to the carnal needs of the American sailor. There was hundreds of clubs located outside the main gate, in Barrio Barretto, or in nearby Subic. When the Navy departed the Mayor of Olongapo started to clean up the image of the city. Faced with lack of customers and government pressure, the establishments that provided such services soon were gone from downtown Olongapo. Added to these buildings are the Navy recreational services activities that were deserted.  With the economic recovery of the area and a healthy population of young people, many of these empty buildings have reopened to meet the needs of the young Filipino.
